THE AREA AROUND OUR BRITTANY GITE
Brittany is a verdant corner of France with a landscape of forests and scenic lakes and rivers. It has a rich tapestry of culture and tradition – a perfect place in which to enjoy your holidays; whether your interests include walking, riding, tennis, fishing or boating or if you prefer to seek the cultural and historic heritage of this quiet and friendly people.
The 600 miles of Brittany coastline is both beautiful and varied. The Northern, or Emerald Coast is rugged, with marvellous coves to be found. The Western coast is spectacularly scenic, known as The Pink Granite Coast. To the South the beautiful Golfe De Morbihan with long stretches of sea and sandy beaches overlooking the many small islands some of which are accessible by regular ferries. Enjoy the Quiberon Peninsula with its miles of beautiful sand and try the many water-sports open to all.
Visit the historic chateaux towns such as Pontivy, Josselin, Auray and the wonderful city of Vannes. Sample the marvellous cuisine at the many restaurants offering quality fresh produce at very reasonable prices cooked as only the French know how. Marvel at the Megaliths at Carnac or savour the atmosphere of the ruined Cistercian Abbey at Bon Repos. All within easy driving distance of the gite.
The gite is ideally situated at less than 45 minutes from all three coasts. The village of Kergrist is a thriving and typically Breton community, busy all year round. There are many varied and colourful festivals throughout the year. Several of these involve the wearing of traditional Breton costume, providing a rich spectacle. The locals welcome and enjoy sharing their culture with visitors. The village square is two minutes walk from the gite. There are two restaurants/bars, frequented by locals and visitors alike specialising in lunchtime fare.
The village Boulangerie provides an excellent selection of produce as well as fresh bread and an opportunity to get to know the locals! Everyone stops for a chat, there is absolutely no hurrying. The church, a vital part of the community, completes the village square.
Pontivy – local town
Pontivy is just 5 miles to the South of the gite, steeped in history. Formerly known as Napoleonville, with a fabulous Chateau overseeing the town with its many and varied restaurants and shops. There is an excellent indoor tennis facility, we can arrange court time for you, and join you if you wish!
The River Blavet and the Nantes/Brest canal flow through the town.
Lac de Guerledan
The spectacular Lac de Guerledan is only 15 minutes drive through quiet and virtually empty roads. The lake is some 12 kilometres long, covering over 400 hectares and incorporates several safe sandy beaches around its edge, bars and restaurants easily accessed by boat or car. There are designated areas for anything from pedaloes to canoes, rowing boats to sailing boats, swimming and fishing. The lake is perfect for water skiing. At our gite we have ample safe parking space for cars, 4 x 4’s, boats and trailers. Access on and off the water is easy and moorings are available. The ski run is some 8 Km. long. If you don’t bring your own equipment, slalom and jumps as well as regular water ski-ing can be arranged through the local ski club.
Walk or ride round the lake as far as you wish. There are plenty of good restaurants and bars at various points around the lake, simply spoiled for choice. It is possible to tour the lake on one of the cruise boats and in summer evenings dinner cruises are available.
The Abbey de Bon Repos
The Abbey of Bon Repos dates from the 12th Century and was built by Cistercian Monks. There have been numerous rebuilds through the centuries but it was destroyed during the revolution. The Abbey is currently undergoing restoration once more and makes an atmospheric focal point for visitors. There are craft and gift shops alongside the Abbey and a choice of good restaurants nearby. Again, just a short drive from the gite.
